Discover how light and shadow can transform a flat shape into something with depth, dimension, and form. In this interactive lecture class, you’ll learn how to recognize and create highlights, midtones, reflected light, core shadows, and cast shadows.
Using the provided handouts and pencils, we’ll work through guided shading exercises beginning with a value scale and simple forms, then apply those concepts to a more dimensional subject. You’ll learn how to identify the direction of the light source, determine where values belong, and use the direction of your pencil strokes to help describe form.
This class focuses on developing your eye and understanding the principles of shading. No sewing machine or thread painting is required.
Students will need: Pencils, colored pencils, eraser, and pencil sharpener. Handouts will be provided.
